Phthalates or Bisphenol-A = Thyroid Disfunction
The first large-scale and nationally representative study of its kind confirms the existence of a link between phthalates and lower-than-normal thyroid hormone levels.
More specifically, the group of researchers compared urine metabolites and serum thyroid measures from over 1,600 adults and adolescents and found an inverse relationship between markers of exposure and thyroid levels – thus, as urinary metabolite concentrations increased (showing presence of phthalates), so the serum levels of certain thyroid hormones decreased and levels of TSH (a marker of low thyroid function) increased.
The correlation was strongest between thyroid disruption and DEHP, a form of phthalates used as plasticisers. In addition, the study found a similar correlation between Bisphenol-A levels and thyroid disfunction.
The study was conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan and the complete results can be found here.

Baby Einstein - Baby Van Gogh - World of Colors
The company suggests the program is for toddlers between the ages of 1 and 4. Harsh sounds between segments--such as balloons popping and tires screeching--will draw the attention of youngsters but will probably render the video inappropriate for babes in arms. The video can be purchased by itself or with a beautifully produced 28-page book featuring Van Gogh's paintings, screen shots from the video, and Clark's poems. The combination set may be the best way to engage 3- and 4-year-olds' interest; they can follow along in the text while watching the video. Music includes "The William Tell Overture," "The Blue Danube," "Bolero," and Brahms's "Lullaby." The video also provides information on the cool toys seen in the ending "Toy Chest" segment. --Doug Thomas

When babies are first born, they see in black and white. This is why the Play and Grow Peacock strikes a balance between bright, high contrast patterns that help stimulate baby's vision, and bold solid colors that give baby's eyes a place to rest. Sounds like crinkle, squeakers and jingles also help stimulate and develop baby's auditory skills. Finally, large, friendly eyes on the Play and Grow Peacock invite baby to focus and stare at a single object, which helps calm baby while supporting healthy eye development.
Child-Safe Design
Whether they're playing in the crib or preparing for a nap, your little one will enjoy hours of delight with the Play and Grow Peacock. Safe and easy for little hands to manipulate, it features a soft velour body that invites snuggling and playing. And the busy wings have different textures and interactive components--like the mirror, which allows for both independent and parent/baby peek-a-boo play--to keep baby engaged as he grows.
The Play and Grow Peacock comes with a limited 90 day warranty.

|
Keep children safe with the Superyard XT. View larger. |
For busy parents and dog-owners wishing to contain their children or pets in a safe, sturdy play area while they attend to tasks, the Superyard XT is the answer. Made of durable reinforced plastic, this gate weathers both outdoor elements and the wear-and-tear of play time, so you can look forward to years of use.
Do you want to keep your dog nearby while you spend a few hours in the garden? Or finish chores in the house while keeping the little ones safe and entertained? The Superyard XT makes it all possible. Weighing less than 20 pounds, this lightweight gate folds flat and even comes with a carrying strap, making it easy to carry everywhere from the park to the babysitter's.
Easy to Assemble and Adjust
Setting up the Superyard XT is hassle-free. The six interlocking panels are pre-connected--simply pull the panels out of box, unfold and connect them together, and the Superyard XT is ready for use. To put away, simply disconnect one panel, fold together, and store. The Superyard XT is so easy you can set it up and take it down in under a minute. The hassle-free panels also give you quick and convenient access to your child or pet.
Measuring 26 inches high with a diameter of 18.5 square feet, this size-adjustable play yard provides an ample play area. If you'd like to extend the Superyard XT's overall diameter, consider purchasing a two-panel extension kit (sold separately) which increases the play yard's space from 18.5 to a generous 34 square feet.
Versatile Design Offers Many Uses
With its sturdy, flexible construction, the Superyard XT has many convenient uses. For example, you can use it as an enclosure to keep cruising babies or pets away from potentially unsafe settings, such as Christmas tree displays, office areas, storage areas, and more. And if you have a new puppy or kitten, you might also considering using the play yard as an area for house training or a timeout area for a naughty puppy.

The Good, the Bad, and the Organic
Noting that fruits and vegetables are essential to a good and healthy diet, the Environmental Working Group Released its list of fruits and vegetables with the highest amounts of pesticides, along with those that carry the lowest amounts of these chemicals. With a few exceptions, the “good” includes fruits and vegetables that are normally eaten without the skin while most on the “bad” list are eaten whole with the skin on.
How can we avoid the dangers posed by the Dirty Dozen? Buy organic or buy local at farmers’ markets and talk to the farmers to learn about their practices.
The Bad:
1. Apples
2. Celery
3. Strawberries
4. Peaches
5. Spinach
6. Nectarines
7. Grapes
8. Sweet Bell Peppers
9. Potatoes
10. Blueberries
11. Lettuce
12. Kale/Collared Greens
The Good:
1. Onions
2. Sweet Corn
3. Pineapple
4. Avocado
5. Asparagus
6. Sweet Peas
7. Mangoes
8. Eggplant
9. Cantaloupe
10. Kiwi
11. Cabbage
12. Watermelon

Disturbing Research Findings
According to a new study conducted by Penn State’s Hershey Medical Center, fetuses exposed to high levels of Bisphenol-A (BPA) (up to 37.5 micrograms per liter) at 16 weeks of gestation had an increased risk of transient wheeze. More specifically, at the age of 6 months these infants were twice as likely to wheeze and the wheezing condition persisted up to age 3 and then cleared up. According to this study, exposure to BPA later in pregnancy did not have the same effect. How to reduce your exposure to BPA? One simple step – choose glass containers or the right plastics (#1,#2, and #5).
In addition, the number of studies that draw a link between prenatal exposure to organophosphates (a class of agricultural pesticides) and lower intelligence scores in children has now increased to three. In addition to the California study I have mentioned in a previous post, two New York studies (one conducted by the Mt. Sinai Medical Center and the other by Columbia University) that examined the effect of these pesticides (as measured from the mothers’ urine prior to giving birth) on 7-year-olds living in New York City found a strong link between the amount of pesticides measured and the drop in IQ scores of these kids. The correlation was even higher in California than in New York, most likely because the California study was done in the rural area of Salinas Valley where the mothers were in closer contact with the pesticides. However, the correlation is strong enough with the New York kids to warrant a warning. Continue to eating your vegetables and fruits, just make sure to wash them and choose organic whenever you can!

Cell Phones And Cancer – Especially In Kids
The World Health Organization concluded a few days ago that radiation from cell phones may possibly cause cancer and put cell phones on the same list as engine exhaust, chloroform, lead, and others that are “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” The type of radiation that is emitted by cell phones is called non-ionizing radiation, which is similar to that emitted by a low-powered microwave oven (does that get you thinking too???)
Scientists from 14 countries participated in the study and reviewed additional studies done by their peers and believe that there is some evidence suggesting an increase in glioma and acoustic neuroma brain cancer for cell phone users. However, the scientists have not been able to draw conclusions for other types of cancers that may be caused as a result of cell phone use and the reason for inconclusiveness in other areas is that most environmental factors take decades of exposure before their effects are conclusive and cell phones have not been around long enough.
Cell phone radiation is especially dangerous to children and young adults whose skulls, still under development, are thinner and radiation can more easily pass through.
I wonder about the health effects of other wireless devices – microwave ovens and other mobile personal devices such as BlackBerry devices for sure, but how about cordless phones? Tablets?

Organic/Farm-Supplied Restaurant Receives Recognition
The James Beard Foundation Awards for best restaurants/chefs in the country were handed out yesterday and again an organic/farm-supplied restaurant was recognized (as semi-finalist, but definitely a winner in my book)! We are finally getting somewhere!
Blue Hill, a restaurant in New York City supplied by Blue Hill Farm of Pocantico Hills, NY (which also has a restaurant on its premises (Blue Hill at Stone Barn) as well as a Center for Food and Agriculture), was one of the finalists in the Outstanding Restaurant Category. I have not been to Blue Hill in New York City (yet) but had the good fortune of visiting the Center for Food and Agriculture and Blue Hill at Stone Barn. The farm itself is amazing, with an endless variety of fruit and vegetable fields and pastures with free-roaming chickens and other farm animals. The restaurant on the farm has no menu – instead, diners are presented with a list of available farm-grown ingredients from which they can select their courses.
Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area!
