Cell Phones, Cancer, and Infertility
Several recent scientific studies concluded that cellphones are “possibly carcinogenic to humans” and determined that cellphones may potentially cause brain cancer, especially in children whose skulls are still developing (see my earlier post below). In one study, scientists found that the rate of brain glioma (a type of tumor) doubled in individuals who used cellphones for a period of 10 years or longer. In addition, as a follow-up to a 2005 and a 2007 study, Austrian researches found that cellphone use may also damage sperm production and is a likely contributor to male infertility. At this point there is no conclusive evidence on whether cellphone radiation my also disrupt embryonic development and whether damaged sperm DNA may affect the development of the fetus and increase the newborn’s risk of developing cancer.
Of course (almost) no one is going to give up his or her cellphone. And maybe you don’t have to – there are other precautions you can take, such as (i) using a head set or Bluetooth device, (ii) holding the phone at a distance when talking (instead of pressing it to your temple and ear), (iii) texting or emailing whenever possible, and (iv) storing it away from your body (no stuffing it into your jeans pockets anymore).
Alternatively, you can also get a radiation shield device for your phone, such as the WaveShield. The company also sells monitor shields (yes, we are exposed to radiation at work while using our computers – but the levels are considered to be safe).

Imagine Babysitters
All action takes place on the DS' touch screen, where the players will except jobs and converse with parents, and provide care and nurturing for their new charges utilizing the DS stylus. Success with initial babysitting jobs increases the number of parents that approach players and ask for your help as the game progresses. Success is also rewarded with payment. Away from their babysitting duties players can use the money they earn to make a variety of in-game purchases including: new clothes, a haircut and new baby toys. In addition, although primarily designed as a singleplayer game, Imagine Babysitters also has a basic multiplayer mode. In it two players, each with their own DS game cartridge, come together for a play date in the nursery, giving your child an even greater opportunity to imagine what a real babysitting experience is like. Key Game Features:
- Care for up to eight adorable babies from different families. Follow the babies' growth and development as they learn new skills.
- Develop a loving relationship with the babies - feed them, nurse them, rock them to sleep.
- Help the babies learn and grow through 15 interactive mini-games, including memory games, puzzle games, coloring activities and more.
- Organize play dates with other babies in multiplayer mode.
- Give the babies their own looks with a variety of cute outfits.

Green Babies’ Calming Bubble Bath
Green Babies’ Calming Bubble Bath with lavender and chamomille, but without synthetic fragrances, parabens, sulfates, phthalates or other nasties, is a nice addition to the organic/natural body care product lines. The scent is calming but not overpowering, the texture smooth and the product gentle on the skin. Even the bottle is part-recycled material. Definitely worth trying.

GMO labeling gets more attention – The Right2Know March
The Right2Know March is going to kick off in New York City on October 1, 2011 and will continue straight down the East Cost before ending in Washington, D.C. at the White House.
The goal of the marchers is to achieve GMO labeling standards in the US – they believe that they, and all of us as consumers, have the right to know if the food we consume has been made with genetically modified organisms. In many industrial and developing countries, GMOs are prohibited as their safety has not been proved. In some other countries that allow GMOs labeling requirements are in place to inform consumers about the foods and produce they are about to purchase. In the U.S., on the other hand, GMOs are widely used but food products need not be labeled to indicate that they contain GMOs. Pursuant to certain estimates, 80-percent of the foods in U.S. grocery stores contain GMO ingredients.
Proponents of GMO crops and food products suggest that they are safe, nutritious, and benefit the environment by reducing the use of herbicides and pesticides. According to the Non-GMO Project, on the other hand, ample evidence suggest that GMOs are, in fact, far from safe and nutritious as they:
* can be toxic, allergenic or less nutritious than their natural counterparts
* can disrupt the ecosystem, damage wild plant and animal populations and harm biodiversity
* increase chemical inputs (pesticides, herbicides) over the long term
* deliver yields that are no better, and often worse, than conventional crops
* are laboratory-made and, once released, harmful GMOs cannot be recalled from the environment.
With the long term effects of GMOs being unclear, it is not a surprise that people want the right to decide for themselves what types of foods they consume and feed to their families. So far, biotech companies and others with financial interest in GMOs have successfully lobbied Congress against the labeling of GMO foods. The goal of the Right2Know March is to change that, to give consumers the right to know and the right to choose.
